Description
The study was based on the impact of teaching Religious Education in Zambia targeting selected Secondary Schools in the Lusaka District. The study's aim was to identify learners’ attitudes toward Religious Education. The investigation proved that pupils had an interest in learning Religious Education. The teaching was done by experienced, mature, and qualified teachers who were able to handle the classes effectively.
The study also focused on pupils who sometimes experienced abuse from some teachers.
The method used in this study was a qualitative approach through questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed to five secondary schools which targeted teachers teaching Religious Education, grade eleven and twelve classes learning the subject. Each school was given twenty questionnaires for pupils while teachers were given according to the number found at that school.
The study findings indicate that the teaching of Religious Education in schools would promote the full and well-versed development of the physical, intellectual, social, moral, and spiritual qualities of pupils so that each can develop into a complete person for his or her own personal fulfillment and the good of society.
Based on the findings, the study established that the teaching of Religious Education in Secondary Schools is beneficial. It also shows that those pupils who came from other faiths should feel at ease as they learn from the same environment.
From this study, the following are the recommendations:
·Ministry of General Education should continue allocating qualified teachers in order to have mature and experienced teachers as an added advantage to the benefit of pupils.
Ministry of General Education should continue providing the syllabus so that the same material is used in all schools.
Ministry of General Education should ensure that educators assist pupils so that they are aware of other religious faiths.
Educators should make Religious Education more lively and interesting by teaching with innovativeness in class so that the subject becomes more relevant and beneficial to pupils.
The Ministry of Education should ensure that educators are not biased in order to accommodate all pupils regardless of their religious affiliation.
Teachers should always encourage pupils to participate in religious gatherings and worship so that they have different experiences.
Educators should promote inter-faith dialogue with the guidance of the educator so that pupils learn from each another.
Ministry General Education should continue revising the syllabus so that the knowledge is in line with the current country’s situation of a multi-religion.
