Description
The study investigates the factors contributing to the attraction of mainline church members to Pentecostal prophets. A case study of three United Church of Zambia congregations in Kabwe District. The three congregations are located south of Kabwe. Once a powerful mining Centre, Kabwe suffered an economic decline after the few industries and mines were closed. The study was conducted in three congregations through the clergy, Church elders, MCF, WCF, and youth.
The purposes of the study are, therefore, firstly, to investigate the factors contributing to the attraction of mainline members to Pentecostal prophets. Secondly, to study and find out the views about today’s prophetic practices in the Kabwe district. Thirdly, to determine the impact of Prophetic practices among the Clergy and general membership in UCZ. Last but not least is to present accurate information about the subject which in turn will help the members to know how they can handle their personal situations in future.
The principles of the phenomenological and interpretive approaches were key considerations in the methodology to get detailed information. The qualitative approach was used in the study. Ethical and methodological issues including respondent’s rights were given special consideration in this study. The tools and instruments used in this study to collect data included interviews, focus group discussion, library and observation.
The findings revealed that there are many factors contributing to the attraction of UCZ members to Pentecostal prophets. These include poverty, titles such as prophet, prophecy, miracles, healing and deliverance, media, hospitality, and ignorance to mention but a few. The findings have also revealed that some ministers and members in UCZ are influenced by prophetic practices in different areas of their Christian lives. Therefore the UCZ has been challenged to start doing more teachings as opposed to preaching every Sunday.
It has also been challenged to consider incorporating some Pentecostal practices such as healing and deliverance.
